Pigeon Forge Offers New Reasons To Use Vacation Days in 2019

Family-friendly destination ready to prevent millions of vacations days from going to waste.


PIGEON FORGE, Tennessee (Jan. 30, 2019)—According to the latest research*, 705 million vacation days go unused annually in the U.S. The city of Pigeon Forge (Tennessee) has several new reasons for workers to spend those hard-earned vacation days in the family-friendly destination located in the Great Smoky Mountains.


“What better way to spend vacation days than with family and friends, sharing great times and memories,” said Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism Executive Director Leon Downey. “With the wide variety of attractions and entertainment that Pigeon Forge offers for all ages, including lots of new ones this year, folks should get their calendars out now and start planning to come see us!”


Pigeon Forge always delivers on the promise of something new for visitors to see and do each year, and 2019 is no exception.


Dollywood theme park’s Wildwood Grove, opening this spring, features 11 new experiences for guests, six of which are ride attractions, including a suspended family roller coaster called the Dragonflier as well as a 55-foot-tall Wildwood Tree, live entertainment, the Till & Harvest restaurant, and various indoor and outdoor play areas including Hidden Hollow, a 4,000-square-foot indoor play space.


The Island, a retail, dining, lodging and entertainment complex, has added Yee-Haw Brewing Company, a production brewery and taproom that offers ales and lagers, including Yee-Haw’s World Beer Cup award-winning Dunkel, as well as seasonal and high-gravity beers. Visitors also can enjoy the Spinning Parrots family coaster; RideMakerz, an immersive remote-control car customizing experience; and the Savannah Bee Company which sells specialty honey and honey-based products. Paula Deen’s Lumberjack Feud Show is the centerpiece of the new Lumberjack Square, which also is home to Paula Deen’s Lumberjack Feud Adventure, a ropes course, extreme zipline, roller coaster, an 80-foot-tall jump tower, a multi-level lumberjack-themed adventure park and an aerial kids’ playground. The show features 11 competitive lumberjack events including axe throwing, chopping, sawing, speed climbing, and log rolling in a 350-seat climate-controlled outdoor venue where world-class lumberjacks square off daily from spring through December. The new Rocky Top Mountain Coaster sits on more than 20 acres and takes riders on a nine-minute journey that traverses multiple 360-degree turns, four tunnels, thrilling curves, and daring hairpin turns, all propelled by four uplifts and four drops, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 30 miles per hour. Able to accommodate riders as young as three years of age (with minimum height requirement), it is another family attraction.


Other attractions opening this summer include Titanic Museum Attraction’s collection of Titanic lifejackets, the world’s largest ever assembled since the ship’s maiden voyage. Only 12 lifejackets are known to exist, and beginning July 1, seven from collectors worldwide will be on display through November 2019 in Pigeon Forge for the first time in history. The 200-foot-tall Mountain Monster three-in-one thrill ride anchors the Tower Shops at Mountain Mile, a 180,000-square-foot multi-purpose retail, dining and family entertainment development that spans 174 acres. Mountain Monster, opening this summer, will offer guests a drop ride, a dive ride and a swing, all in one attraction.


Uncle Lem’s Outfitters, a soon-to-open 4,580-square-foot retail space, supports and encourages a love of the great outdoors by supplying enthusiasts with the necessary gear. Uncle Lem’s takes advantage of the area’s natural setting and plans to offer the services of hiking, fishing, bicycling, and outdoor adventure guides. It will open with paddle board and kayak rentals with bicycle rentals to follow.


Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, a Dolly Parton Company, will be located adjacent to The Island in Pigeon Forge in a 21,000-square-foot arena. Crimson and Sapphire pirates battle on deck, in the water, and in the sky above their full-sized ships in a 15-foot-deep indoor lagoon. The show also includes a four-course pirate feast.


Pigeon Forge offers more than 14,500 overnight accommodations, ranging from hotels and condos to cabins and campgrounds. Joining the lineup this year are the 200-room Ramsey Hotel & Convention Center; the 108-room Fairfield Inn & Suites; and the 102-room Tru by Hilton.

Deadline Approaches To Nominate ‘Super Student’ To Win $5,000 for School, Plus Family Vacation

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (April 29, 2015) – This Sunday (May 3) is the deadline to nominate students who set good examples so one can win $5,000 for his or her school and a family vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., in the Great Smoky Mountains.

The Pigeon Forge Super Students promotion encourages parents, teachers and friends to nominate students ages 8-14 who stand out by setting good examples and going the extra mile to benefit others.

“The winner could come from anywhere, and the good deeds could be almost anything. Perhaps it’s a child who mentors peers, perhaps it’s one who created a recycling program, perhaps it’s one who is the glue that holds a family together. We’re eager to put someone in the spotlight,” said Leon Downey, executive director of the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism.

All nominations are done online at Nominators must be at least 18 years old. There will be a top winner and four secondary winners.

“We’re challenging nominators to explain a child’s special behavior carefully and briefly. There’s a 100-word cap on the supporting message,” Downey said.

The top winner gets a Pigeon Forge family vacation that includes lodging, meals and admission to attractions such as Dollywood, the Lumberjack Feud and the Titanic Museum Attraction.

That student’s school will receive an unrestricted gift of $5,000.

The other four winners will receive family passes to approximately 20 Pigeon Forge attractions, and their schools will receive $1,000.

“Every school could use extra cash for many, many purposes. We want the Super Students’ good works to have a direct impact on their schools,” Downey said.

Pigeon Forge has a long record of advocating for family vacations and organizing activities that have rewarded families.

It once gave away a tanker truckload of gasoline during a fuel shortage crisis, it saluted a military family prior to the dad’s deployment to Afghanistan with a vacation that included meeting Dolly Parton and it once organized a family’s first-ever vacation.

Pigeon Forge is a gateway city to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and home of approximately 80 visitor attractions, more than a dozen theaters and scores of restaurants and shops.

Tour Companies Put Pigeon Forge Under Microscope

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (Aug. 11, 2014) – Pigeon Forge is putting itself on display for 55 VIPs this week in hopes that they will bring thousands of tourists to this Great Smoky Mountains resort town.

The Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism put the word out to the group sales industry about a three-day familiarization tour from Tuesday through Thursday.

“It filled up almost immediately with 55 tour operators from 33 companies in seven states,” said Joy McNealy, senior sales manager for the tourism department, noting that the city is entertaining companies from Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

“Some who are coming needed to see all that’s new in town, and others never have been to Pigeon Forge. It’s a great opportunity to sell ourselves,” she said.

Most participating tour companies deal in retail group travel, but others specialize in student travel, family reunions and business meetings.

There is a fixed itinerary for all participants that includes Dollywood, the Titanic Museum Attraction and performances at the Lumberjack Feud, the Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show, the Smoky Mountain Opry and the Grand Majestic Theater.

Then, there are options to see other shows such as Dixie Stampede, Country Tonite, Memories Theatre and the Great Smoky Mountain Murder Mystery.

“You simply can’t show everything in town, so giving people options that suit their own needs is a necessity,” McNealy said.

A trade show on Thursday at the LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge will provide opportunities for 35 Pigeon Forge businesses to make sales pitches. Businesses include attractions, theaters, lodging properties, cabin companies, restaurants and receptive tour companies.

“The group tour market is extremely important to Pigeon Forge,” said Leon Downey, executive director of the tourism department.

“The American Bus Association is fond of saying that just one overnight stay from a motorcoach can represent as much as $25,000 in revenue to a city. The spending per motorcoach isn’t quite that high for Pigeon Forge, of course, but every tour brings major dollars to town. We love to see tour companies’ motorcoaches roll down the Parkway,” Downey said.

Army Family Deploys to Pigeon Forge Before Afghanistan

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (July 2012) – An Army family facing a sixth deployment to a war zone got some special time together in Pigeon Forge, and their experience was captured as a half-hour show for the Great American Country (GAC) cable TV network.

“Operation Pigeon Forge: A Family Story” focuses on Staff Sgt. Gerald Britt, his wife Shasta and their children Gabe and Madison. It premiers July 12 at 9:30 p.m. Eastern and has 11 more airings later in the month.

Gerald has orders to Afghanistan this fall. He has been to Iraq three times, as well as to Kosovo and Bosnia. Shasta, a veteran herself, is a civilian employee of the Family Readiness Group at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, assisting other military families with members overseas.

“Before this soldier deploys to Afghanistan, GAC deploys his family to Pigeon Forge,” said show host Nan Kelley, explaining the concept of the program.

The Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism partnered with GAC, which is available in 62 million households and online at, to salute the Britts.

GAC cameras tagged along with the Britts at Pigeon Forge attractions such as Dollywood, the Titanic Museum Attraction, Dixie Stampede, The Track and the Country Tonite show. The Lumberjack Feud dinner show plucked Gerald from the audience for an ax-throwing challenge. His marksmanship was solid.

The Britts’ vacation coincided with the annual Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade, and Pigeon Forge surprised them by building a float for them to ride on and receive the applause of thousands lining the parade route.

An even bigger surprise came when Dolly Parton greeted them before the parade and offered her personal thanks for their service.

“Families are hugely important to Pigeon Forge, and we are pleased that Pigeon Forge is hugely important to many families. We make memories that strengthen family bonds,” said Leon Downey, executive director of the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism.
